To advance marine technology innovation and expand international marine cooperation, the conference Marine Geology: Marginal Seas – Past and Future took place in Nansha from Oct 14 to 18.
The conference, conducted in an "offline + online" format, attracted over 100 experts and scholars from 10 countries and regions, including the United States, Poland, Italy, the Netherlands, and Malaysia, alongside domestic researchers.

Jan Eduard Harff, a recipient of the China International Science and Technology Cooperation Award and an academician of the Russian and Lithuanian Academies of Sciences, highlighted at the conference the urgent need for international and interdisciplinary collaboration to manage marginal seas sustainably amid climate change and heavy human impact.
The "Eurasian Marginal Seas – Past and Future" international scientific initiative is entering a new research phase. Harff expressed his hopes that the initiative will unite scientists in oceanography, environmental science, and data technology with stakeholders in sustainability, aligning with the United Nations' goals.
Launched in 2019 by the Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey and international experts, the initiative now includes over 50 institutions from 30 countries, making it a major force in marine geosciences.

Wojcieh Jeglinski of the Polish Geological Institute expressed optimism about the collaboration's potential, emphasizing the benefits of shared experiences between the Baltic Sea and China's Pearl River Delta region.
Joanna Duzdinksa-Nowak from the University of Szczecin made her first visit to Nansha and found the exchanges between China and Poland.
She also stressed the importance of addressing coastal challenges like rising sea levels, temperatures, and ocean pollution through joint efforts.
The conference also discussed elevating the initiative to a global scale and forming an international scientific organization based in Nansha, aiming to bolster marine geoscience cooperation between Guangdong province and Poland's West Pomeranian Voivodeship.
