Updated: 2025-08-05nansha.guangdong.chinadaily.com.cn

The connecting section project between the Shiziyang Channel and the Guangzhou-Zhongshan-Jiangmen Expressway began construction on July 29, with plans to open to traffic in 2027.

The connecting section project covers 2,033 meters and involves widening and reconstructing bridges, rebuilding interchanges, and road renovations. Previously, the two expressways were not directly linked, and their lane counts were mismatched, requiring comprehensive reconstruction.

The Nanzhong Bridge reconstruction is a major project, involving widening the bridge deck by 2.25 meters on each side to support eight-lane bidirectional traffic, aligning with the upper level of the Shiziyang Channel. The Fangma Hub Interchange will also undergo functional upgrades.

The link between the Guangzhou-Zhongshan-Jiangmen Expressway and the Shiziyang Channel will enhance traffic flow between cities on both sides of the Pearl River.

The reconstruction of the Nanzhong Bridge is the world's first widening of a large-span concrete cable-stayed bridge with a central plane, facing many top-tier challenges. The project team overcame technical hurdles after thousands of tests and created a full-scale physical model for full-process simulation.

In addition, the height of both the east and west main towers of the Shiziyang Bridge has surpassed the halfway point.

As of now, the Shiziyang Channel construction is advancing steadily and in an organized fashion.
