Light rail from Nansha to Macao to open within year

Updated: 2024-04-03nansha.guangdong.chinadaily.com.cn

On April 1, the reserved space for the extension of the Macao Light Rail to Hengqin port in Zhuhai was handed over to the Macao Special Administrative Region government, paving the way for the potential opening of the Macao Light Rail extension to Hengqin within the year.

The line will ease travel for residents of Nansha. The journey to Macao will involve taking the subway or high-speed rail to Guangzhou South Station, transferring to the urban rail to Hengqin Railway Station, and then using the extended Macao Light Rail to travel from Hengqin Station to Lianhua Station in Macao, where passengers can transfer to the Macao Light Rail.

The project comprises elevated bridges, underwater tunnels, and two stations, with a total length of approximately 2.2 kilometers. It is expected to undergo inspection and trial operation by October this year. The civil construction and train system engineering for the project have been largely completed, and equipment testing is underway.

This initiative is a key cross-border livelihood project between the Macao SAR and the city of Zhuhai, aimed at making transportation more convenient in the Hengqin area and promoting engagement and cooperation between Hengqin and Macao.
