Recently, white canes planted in Tanzhou town, Nansha district, have entered their maturity stage with healthy growth and an increasing volume of advanced sales.
Villagers in Longgu village, cultivated 30 mu (2 hectares) of white canes in 2024. Countrywide merchants, mainly from Foshan and Zhongshan, reserved the sugar canes before the spring festival.
Tanzhou white canes, a regional specialty of Nansha district, are renowned for their sweet aroma and juicy flesh. Beyond their commercial appeal, these sugarcanes have also fostered a unique sugarcane culture.
In ancient times, the Panyu people would present some sugarcanes to their relatives, friends, and even the whole village at New Year to celebrate the birth of children. The sugarcanes were necessary to offer sacrifices to the ancestors during the Tomb Sweeping Day. Besides, there is also a custom called Cane Fighting—people jointly buy white sugarcanes and engage in friendly competitions by splitting them.
Each sugarcane represents the hard work and dedication of the villagers, carrying with it their aspirations for a better life.
