The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs recently announced the list of demonstration regions for creating a safe fishery from 2022 to 2023.

Nansha district in Guangzhou was selected as a national demonstration county for safe fishery, making it one of the three selected areas in Guangdong province and the only selected district in Guangzhou.

The district has invested 7.7 million yuan ($1 million) to enhance information management methods, establish temporary shelter points for large and medium-sized fishing vessels, and accelerate the reduction and renewal of fishing vessels to eliminate safety hazards.

The proportion of wooden fishing vessels has decreased from 80.2 percent at the end of 2022 to just 18.9 percent, maximizing the elimination of safety risks.

As a district with advantageous aquatic resources in Guangdong, Nansha had a total aquaculture area of over 104,000 mu (6933 hectares) in 2022, with a total aquatic product output of 166,500 metric tons, representing a year-on-year increase of 4.2 percent.

The total output value of the fishery reached 5.3 billion yuan, an increase of 12 percent compared to the previous year. The main aquaculture species include grass carp, blue crab, South American white shrimp, and eel.

In November 2023, Nansha also obtained the "Hometown of China's butter Crab" distinction, a prestigious national title.
