The opening ceremony of the Guangzhou Nansha Huanong Fisheries Research Institute was held on March 28.

The institute is expected to promote the high-quality development of the fisheries industry and the construction of modern marine pastures in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Located in Wanqinsha town, Nansha district, this institute includes a main building, a dormitory building, and 300 mu (20 hectares) of experimental fish ponds.

The institute will be dedicated to building an international highland of innovation in the aquatic seed industry, as well as building a base for the collaboration between industries, universities, and research institutes.

It will also help foster the transfer and transformation of results, and serve as a training base for high-level graduate students.

The institute has established five major fisheries innovation platforms, covering the aquatic breeding and seed industry, aquatic germplasm resources and environment, aquatic disease prevention and control, aquatic precision nutrition, as well as smart fisheries and protected farming.

In recent years, Nansha's agricultural economy has seen a steady growth, as its total output value ranking first in Guangzhou for three consecutive years. With an aquaculture area of nearly 110,000 mu, Nansha has the largest area of contiguous standardized fish ponds in Guangdong.
