Guangzhou's Nansha district plans to hold flower markets in seven places such as Dongchong town cultural plaza and Huahui international plaza, local media outlets reported on Jan 8.

Shopping in flower markets for new year flowers and oranges is a tradition for the people of Guangzhou and the surrounding areas, as flowers and oranges symbolize good luck.

Of particular note, Nansha is one of the main production areas for new year flowers and oranges. The district has over 200 growers, mainly in Lanhe town, Dagang town and Dongchong town.

This year, Nansha has more than one million pots of new year flowers and oranges prepared for the flower markets, of which about 600,000 are orange pots. These pots may vary, but typically contain new year oranges, peach blossoms and chrysanthemums.

The flower market at Dongchong town cultural plaza will last for six days from Jan 15 to 20, and the one at Huahui international plaza will last from Jan 10 to 20. In addition to the flower markets, temporary stalls will be set up near plantations to help farmers sell flowers.
