The cooperation between Guangdong and Hong Kong is promising because everything that seemed to be impossible in the past has become reality, Leung Chun-ying, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, told Guangzhou Daily recently.

Nansha plays an essential role in facilitating Guangdong-Hong Kong cooperation as it is closer to Hong Kong compared with Hengqin and Qianhai, which serve as liaisons between Guangdong and Hong Kong, Leung added.

According to Leung, Guangdong and Hong Kong should learn from each other's successful experiences, as well as give full play to their respective advantages to bolster mutual development in their cooperation.

"Hong Kong can serve as a link to connect Nansha with the world. It can empower the development of Nansha and Guangdong not only with its own strength, but also with international strength," Leung said.

"As Hong Kong is a highly open economy, it can provide experience, systems, policies and even regulations for the Chinese mainland to learn in terms of how to improve its level of openness."

Guangzhou, a city which has successful experience in city planning, city transformation, and infrastructure construction, is also a good example for Hong Kong to follow to solve relevant problems, Leung noted.

"The biggest problem lying ahead of Guangdong-Hong Kong cooperation at present is that they know little about each other," said Leung. "Some cities in the Chinese mainland do not know what the latest functions of Hong Kong are, while many people in Hong Kong do not follow the latest development of cities in the Chinese mainland."

The Guangzhou Nansha Guangdong-Hong Kong Cooperation Advisory Committee was set up to address this problem. The committee not only provides advisory services for Guangzhou and Nansha, but also details the latest development and policies of Guangdong, Guangzhou, and Nansha to Hong Kong.

Leung said that he expected more members of the center in Hong Kong will send people to Nansha for communication, and that more people from Guangzhou and Nansha will visit Hong Kong to share their stories with locals.
