At the beginning of this year, "Nansha Blue Crab" was approved and registered as a geographical trademark by the China National Intellectual Property Administration, becoming the first geographical regional brand named after Nansha.
Nansha is located near the Pearl River and has a wide variety of fishery resources. Nansha blue crabs are very popular in China due to their delicious taste and nutritious qualities.
As early as the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911) , blue crabs have been a delicacy on people's tables. Nowadays, Nansha blue crabs are also a high-end ingredient in cuisines in coastal areas. Every year, a large number of Nansha blue crabs occupy the Pearl River Delta region, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, and other places in the area.
The price of the Nansha blue crab is the highest among blue crabs in the industry. Purchasers know that Nansha blue crabs have green and shiny carapaces, which are said to give the crabs their unique and delicious taste. The crab meat is firm and elastic, difficult to peel off, and the crab roe solidifies and does not float after cooking.
"Even during low season, the sale price of Nansha blue crabs is 80 yuan ($12) per 500 grams, and other blue crabs are 50 yuan per 500 grams," said Lu Jun, the breeding technical director at Guangzhou Nansha Fishery Industrial Park.
The protein content of Nansha blue crab is 16.8g/100g, some even as high as 19.9 percent, and the total amount of amino acids is 15.6g/100g.
The water around Nansha is rich in minerals and nutrients, and Nansha farmers use live bait such as shellfish to breed Nansha blue crabs, making them grow faster.
In 2021, the Nansha blue crab breeding area reached about 23,000 mu (1,533 hectares), with an annual output of about 1,200 metric tons and an output value of nearly 220 million yuan.
