Guangzhou's Nansha district has seen jaw-dropping performance since it was approved as the first international talent special zone in China in 2021, welcoming hosts of domestic and overseas high-caliber talent.

The amount of high-caliber and essential talent has increased by a factor of 8.4 over the past five years, and more than 770 scientific and technological service institutions and over 2,000 scientific researchers from all over the world have set up operations in Nansha.

The talent environment in Nansha has consistently been successful in attracting high-quality talent and producing strong scientific research results, according to a researcher at the HKUST Fok Ying Tung Research Institute.

"In 2016, I came to the postdoctoral workstation in Nansha and the district provided me with great support in terms of innovation and entrepreneurship. At that time, I received 300,000 yuan ($47,000) in municipal and district research funds and 200,000 yuan in postdoctoral subsidies," he said.

The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Public Research Center for Postdoctoral Science and Technology Innovation (Nansha) had recruited 108 postdoctoral fellows as of November 2021.

At present, there are 53 postdoctoral fellows in nearly 20 disciplines working in the center. They have obtained or participated in more than 150 science and technology projects at the provincial and ministerial level or above, and published more than 200 high-quality articles.

By 2035, Nansha aims to become an international talent special zone with global influence, which will help it further open up to the outside world and boost development in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
