The Guangzhou final of the 2021 HKUST One Million Dollar International Entrepreneurship Competition took place on Aug 6 and a Nansha team beat 219 competitors to win first prize.

The event, which was jointly hosted by Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), the HKUST Guangzhou campus and the HKUST Fok Ying Tung Research Institute, was held both online and on-site.

A total of 219 teams competed in the event, covering various strategic emerging industries such as the new generation of information technology, artificial intelligence, biomedicine and health, new energy and energy conservation as well as environmental protection.

This year's event has marked the first time Nansha has won the first prize at the Guangzhou final since the competition relocated to Nansha six years ago.

Chen Liang, member of the winning team from Nansha, said that the team has developed a medical device that uses acoustic feature filter recognition technology to screen and diagnosis autism in children aged six months old and older, and provides diagnostic results within five minutes.

Currently, the equipment has been put into use in several Guangzhou hospitals. The cure rate for autistic children can be significantly increased if children can get diagnosis and intervention treatment before the age of 3.

"We've started research and development since we registered our company in 2016 and we began production in 2021," added Chen.

Chen said that his team is honored to win the competition, and the team gained a great deal of knowledge by learning more about the market and local policies through the competition.
