Guangzhou's Nansha district is on track to turn the Guangzhou Port Nansha Grain and General Cargo Terminal into a storage and logistics center for grain in the South China region, local media outlets reported on May 24.

The second-phase construction of silos at the port with a total storage capacity of 409,000 metric tons is expected to be finished in 2021, while the expanded terminal is scheduled to be put into operation in 2022, increasing the number of berths at 10,000 ton level to 21.

The handling capacity of grains at Guangzhou Port reached 26.86 million tons in 2020, ranking top in China.

Guangzhou Port has formed a "grain development pattern". It has two terminals on the east bank of the Pearl River, namely Xinsha and Xingang, one on the west bank of the Pearl River which is in Nansha, and one in western Guangdong, which is in Maoming.

The one in Nansha, Guangzhou Port Nansha Grain and General Cargo Terminal, is now the biggest specialized grain terminal on the west bank of the Pearl River, with six deepwater berths. Its annual grain handling capacity is estimated to exceed 10 million tons.

It is estimated that the grain handling capacity at Guangzhou Port Nansha Grain and General Cargo Terminal will reach more than 35 million tons by the end of the 14th Five Year Plan period (2021-25) and its storage capacity will by then stand at around 3.6 million tons, further securing local grain supplies.

Guangzhou Port will continue to stick to the innovation-driven development concept to extend the grain market's industrial chain, and to devote efforts to developing high-end logistics to push forward the upgrading and transformation of its port business.
