The waterfront landscape belt of Lingshan Island in Guangzhou's Nansha district has won the 2020 Asian Townscape Award, local media outlets reported on March 15.

The Asian Townscape Award, jointly set up by the UN-Habitat Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, the Asian Habitat Society, the Fukuoka Asian Urban Research Center and the Asia Townscape Design Society in 2010, annually honors those cities, regions or projects that have played a significant role as models of landscape construction.

The design of the waterfront landscape belt of Lingshan Island places an emphasis on the mutualism between humanity and nature, and shows great respect to the natural environment.

It has created an important habitat and a migration corridor for local creatures, allowing animals like birds and fish to live peacefully on Lingshan Island.

The landscape belt has also formed a multi-level ecological bund, preventing the city from flooding.

Tourist attractions being built along the river such as a children's park, squares and wharfs have all applied the "sponge city" design concept.

Lingshan Island has also sought to improve urban cultural construction, allowing public spaces such as parks and small themed ecological green areas to meet the demands of people organizing traditional cultural activities.
