Progress has been made in the Guangzhou Port Nansha Grain and General Cargo Terminal extension project after a new technique was applied in its construction, Guangzhou Daily reported on Jan 25.

The new technique, used in ground treatment, can shorten the construction period in backfill transport and stowage by three months in total while protecting the environment by reducing dust.

Currently, the ground treatment has been completed for an area of 234,900 square meters, accounting for 81.45 percent of the total land. It is expected that the terminal will be put into operation by March 2022.

The cargo throughput of the Guangzhou Port Nansha Grain and General Cargo Terminal in 2020 exceeded 48 million metric tons, setting a new record.

Two 100,000-metric-ton common berths and a 40,000-ton break bulk berth for sundry goods will be built as part of the extension project, covering a total berth length of 800 meters. Five 5,000-ton common berths will be built on the east coast with an overall length of 493.7 meters.

After construction, the terminal will become a large-scale deep water port terminal with nine berths for grain and general cargo, 10 feeder berths, as well as a coastline of around 3.6 kilometers, becoming the largest logistics center for grain, iron and steel and complete equipment - as well as the biggest distribution center for pulp - in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

It is expected that the project will also contribute to the construction of turning Guangzhou into an international shipping hub and help guarantee the regional grain supply.
