The handling capacity of roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) transportation of commercial automobiles at Guangzhou Port exceeded 1.5 million in 2020, ranking first among all coastal ports in China, officials from Guangzhou Port Group announced on Jan 21.
Guangzhou Port Group, which first started conducting the "ro-ro" transportation business of commercial vehicles in 2004, has seen an average annual growth of more than 33 percent, and has developed into the largest ro-ro automobile wharf in China.
The domestic and overseas sales volumes of commercial automobiles at Guangzhou Port climbed by 2.9 percent and 6.9 percent respectively in 2020, making Guangzhou the only one of its kind among China's coastal ports to record growth in both areas.
Currently, Guangzhou Port has opened import and export shipping routes heading to destinations including Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, North America, Africa, Australia, Japan, and South Korea, transporting automobile brands including SGMW, GAC Honda, GAC Motor, Geely, and Xpeng.
By the end of 2021, Shazai Island in Guangzhou will become the largest ro-ro wharf cluster in China, with seven special berths at 10,000-metric-ton level, a coastal line of 1.8 kilometers, and nearly 1.6 million square meters of storage yards.
