The Zhongshan section of the Nansha-Zhongshan expressway started construction at the Hengmen West Mega Bridge in Zhongshan on Jan 16, meaning the project has gone into full construction ahead of schedule.

Located in the core area of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the Nansha-Zhongshan expressway, directly connecting Nansha and Zhongshan, also allows people to travel to nearby areas such as Zhuhai, Jiangmen and Shenzhen.

The expressway stretches 32.4 kilometers and will include three "mega bridges" and 41 large bridges. Being built at a cost of more than 20 billion yuan ($3.08 billion), the two-way expressway will comprise six lanes with a designated speed of 100 km per hour. It is expected that the new expressway will shorten the travel time by car between the two areas by half an hour.

The expressway's Wanqingsha service area will be the first of its kind in the South China area, combining various functions including transportation, tourism, leisure and business.
