The First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University in Nansha has finished the construction of its main structure and is expected to be put into operation by July 1, 2021, according to the South China branch of China Construction Eighth Engineering Division Corp Ltd on June 8.

Located in the west of Hengli Island in Nansha's Pearl Bay, the hospital covers a planned area of 156,000 square meters and a building area of about 506,000 sq m.

Costing 4.82 billion yuan ($681.95 million), the hospital will be built into a 3A-grade hospital with 1,500 patient beds, the highest of China's three-tier grading system for public hospitals. It will integrate various functions spanning medical treatment, scientific research, and education.

The hospital is divided into two parts, namely the north part and the south part. The north part covers a four- to six-floor comprehensive building for emergency departments and medical technology departments. The south part has four main buildings, namely a 25-floor comprehensive building for teaching, administration, and dormitories, a 16-floor scientific research building, a six-floor animal laboratory center, as well as an 11-floor building for international medical treatment.

In addition to offering high-quality medical services for people in Nansha district after its official operation, the hospital will also provide medical resources for residents in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area due to the district's favorable geographic location.

When completed, the hospital will boast an advanced and efficient logistics transportation system, a standard pure water system for medical use, as well as a complete medical gas supply system.
