Guangzhou's Nansha District is solidifying its position as a frontrunner in autonomous driving, with homegrown industry leader PonyAI unveiling major breakthroughs at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show.

PonyAI, headquartered in Nansha, announced that the total vehicle cost of its 2027 version fully driverless robotaxi has fallen below 230,000 yuan ($31,600), undercutting the lowest-priced domestic Tesla Model 3. The company also debuted the world's first fully automotive-grade, fully redundant Level 4 autonomous light truck, developed in partnership with battery giant CATL.

The cost breakthrough stems from the maturation of China's smart vehicle supply chain and PonyAI's relentless optimization of L4 software and hardware. With over 1,400 robotaxis in operation and a user base exceeding one million — nearly triple the figure from last year — the company has achieved positive unit economics in Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Its "dual-engine strategy" targets expansion to over 20 cities globally by the end of 2026, with fleet size surpassing 3,000 vehicles.

Nansha's autonomous driving ecosystem continues to expand beyond PonyAI. WeRide's unmanned logistics vehicle recently received approval for road testing in the district, while local startup Chuanxing Zhiyuan has deployed unmanned delivery vehicles on Nansha's public roads for real commercial operations serving schools and businesses. Meanwhile, a joint venture between GAC and Huawei obtained L3 conditional autonomous driving test permits on several expressways, including the Nansha Port Expressway.

The district has emerged as a comprehensive testing and deployment hub, hosting driverless taxis, sanitation vehicles, logistics vans, and delivery bots, showcasing an integrated autonomous driving landscape that few other cities can match.
