China's State Council has approved sea-use permits for a major expansion of Guangzhou Port, clearing the way for construction of the Nansha Port Phase V project, which has a total investment of 16.4 billion yuan ($2.3 billion), authorities said on March 26.
The approval, granted by the Ministry of Natural Resources, marks a key regulatory breakthrough for the project, which involves more than 280 hectares of land reclamation—the largest single newly approved reclamation project in Guangzhou in recent years.

Located on Longxue Island in the Nansha port area, the project will play an important role in infrastructure connectivity for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. It will include four 200,000-metric-ton container berths, 15 barge berths and five service berths, with an annual handling capacity exceeding 6 million TEUs.
Construction of preliminary works began in August 2025. Once completed, the new facilities will operate in coordination with existing terminals, reinforcing Guangzhou Port's role as a major international shipping hub.

Nansha Port handled over 20 million TEUs in 2024, ranking among the world's leading single port areas.
