Guangzhou's Nansha district rolled out a batch of technological breakthroughs and major investment funds aimed at accelerating the integration of scientific research and industry at a conference held on March 11.
The Guangzhou Nansha Conference on the Integration of Technological and Industrial Innovation brought together scientists, entrepreneurs, university leaders, and investors, with officials positioning the district as a platform where research, capital, and manufacturing can work more closely together.
At the event, six companies showcased key innovations spanning advanced manufacturing, biotech, and digital technology. Among them was China's first high-end passenger vessel powered by a hybrid system that combines methanol-reforming hydrogen production with fuel cells, developed by CSSC Guangzhou Shipyard International. The vessel represents a step toward low-carbon shipping by advancing both cleaner fuels and greener propulsion systems.
Other breakthroughs included a trusted data-collection device integrating the Internet of Things and blockchain technologies, a domestically developed electromagnetic simulation software platform, a new fluorine-free high-performance nanomaterial, and a gene therapy technology for thalassemia that has already entered clinical use.
Officials said these achievements highlight Nansha's efforts to link laboratories with industrial applications. The district now hosts 1,347 high-tech enterprises and has added 17 national-level "little giant" firms specializing in niche technologies.
To support the innovation pipeline, several investment institutions also announced new funds during the conference, including a 1-billion-yuan ($144.9-million) unicorn investment fund and multiple industrial and venture capital funds. Together, they form part of a broader 30-billion-yuan capital system designed to support companies from early-stage research through to large-scale commercialization.
Local authorities say the goal is to build an ecosystem where universities, enterprises, and investors work together to translate scientific discoveries into marketable technologies.
